One of the most common questions I get before a session is: “Will the leash show in the photos?” It’s a great question, and the short answer is: sometimes yes, but often no and that’s on purpose. Let me explain.


Safety Always Comes First

Most public spaces in Minnesota (and beyond) have on-leash laws, and I always follow them. Leashes keep your pets safe, comfortable, and stress-free, especially in busy areas or unfamiliar locations. Even the calmest pets can get startled, so having them secure is a must. My first priority is always your pet’s wellbeing, and a leash is an important part of that.


What Happens During the Shoot

During the photoshoot, your pet will stay on their leash most of the time. But that doesn’t mean your photos will look “leashed” or stiff. With the right approach, leashes can almost disappear before I even open my editing software.


Here are a few of the tricks I use:

The Loose-Leash Trick

  • Instead of pulling tight, I’ll often have you hold the leash loosely behind your back or let it drape naturally. A relaxed leash creates less tension, blends into the background, and gives your pet more freedom to move into natural poses.

Strategic Angles

  • I pay close attention to camera angles. For example, shooting from a slightly lower position can hide a leash that runs upward toward your hand. Shooting straight-on with your pet can also allow the leash to fall behind them, out of sight.

The Wrap-and-Tuck

  • If your pet is sitting still, sometimes I’ll ask you to wrap part of the leash around your wrist or tuck it behind your body. This keeps it neat and prevents it from dangling across the frame.

Body-Block Method

  • In certain poses, I’ll position your pet so that their own body blocks most of the leash from view. This works especially well if they’re lying down or sitting with their chest forward.

Natural Backdrops

  • I also use the environment to our advantage. Tall grass, bushes, or trees can help camouflage a leash so it blends right into the scenery.


These little adjustments may seem simple, but they make a big difference. By combining thoughtful angles and natural posing, we can minimize how visible the leash is during the session. And for any spots where it still shows up, that’s when I step in during editing to remove or soften it.


Why I Don’t Hide It During the Session

You might wonder why I don’t just take leashes off during the shoot. The truth is, safety is non-negotiable. Keeping leashes on during the session means your pet is secure, and you can relax and enjoy the process without worrying about them running off or getting into danger. It also helps pets feel more comfortable in unfamiliar places.


The Final Result

By the time your gallery is ready, you’ll see your furry friend looking natural, joyful, and completely themselves. Whether the leash was there during the session or not. My goal is always to deliver photos that feel authentic and full of life, with your pet’s personality front and center.
