When most people think of pet photography, they picture dogs and cats and understandably so! But over time, I’ve discovered that some of the most memorable, heartwarming, and downright hilarious moments come from the unexpected stars...the pets you might not think of as professional models. From chickens and horses to cows, goats, and everything in between, every animal has its own personality, quirks, and charm waiting to be captured.
Chickens: Tiny Comedians
Chickens might seem small and unassuming, but let me tell you, they have huge personalities. They’re curious, sassy, and completely unpredictable, which makes every session hilarious and full of surprises. While hanging out with my chickens, I love to pour snacks in a straight line across the grass. As soon as they spot the treats, they jump, run, and flutter their wings, creating a whirlwind of joyful movement. I spend those moments snapping photos, capturing all the hilarious, spontaneous antics that make each chicken so unique. Photographing chickens has taught me the value of patience and the magic of candid, unposed moments.
Horses: Majestic yet Playful
Horses bring a completely different energy to a photoshoot. Their elegance, size, and presence demand respect and a little creativity. From galloping across golden fields to giving the occasional playful nuzzle, horses have a way of turning ordinary moments into something cinematic. One of my favorite sessions involved a horse who decided he had to eat the patch of grass I was sitting on...out of the entire field, I must have picked the best spot! The session was chaotic, unplanned, and absolutely magical in the final images.
Cows: Gentle Giants
Cows bring a quiet, gentle energy to a photoshoot. They’re often shy and unsure at first, carefully observing their surroundings before deciding whether to approach. Patience is key when photographing these gentle giants. Giving them time to sniff, settle, and get comfortable allows their natural curiosity and personality to shine through.
Once they feel safe, even the shyest cows reveal their charm: a soft gaze, a slow head tilt, or a gentle nuzzle can create truly heartwarming and serene images. Photographing cows has taught me that sometimes the quietest moments are the most memorable and that taking things slow often results in the most authentic, beautiful photos.
Ducks: Quirky and Lovable
Ducks might seem calm and simple at first glance, but once the camera is out, their personalities really shine. One of the things I love about photographing ducks is how curious and expressive they can be. They waddle with purpose, tilt their heads in the funniest ways, and sometimes even pose like they know they’re being photographed. While photographing my own ducks, I like to set a hose on a table and turn it to a mist-like mode. They run around, wiggle, shake, and playfully nip at the air with pure joy, leading to the most adorable images. Their quirky antics and bold personalities make every session hilarious and unforgettable. Photographing ducks has taught me to expect the unexpected and to embrace the playful, unpredictable moments that make each shoot truly unique.
Goats: The Showstoppers

While I was doing a session with some goats, it quickly became clear that each one thought they were the star of the show. They strutted, jumped, and nudged each other as if saying, “No, me first!” everyone wanted to fight for the spotlight. Whether they’re leaping mid-air, giving the camera a cheeky look, or just showing off their mischievous antics, the results are always full of laughter and personality. These little showstoppers remind me that capturing candid, spirited moments is often more fun and more memorable than any perfectly posed shot.
Why I Love the Unexpected Stars
What I love most about photographing these “nontraditional” pets is that their personalities shine in ways dogs and cats sometimes don’t. They’re unpredictable, full of character, and often hilariously charming. Capturing their quirks, expressions, and interactions requires patience, creativity, and a sense of humor but the results are always worth it.
Every pet, no matter the species, deserves a chance to shine in front of the camera. Dogs, cats, chickens, horses, pigs, or even that quirky duck when you take the time to notice their unique personalities, you can capture something truly special. And honestly? Some of the most memorable photos I’ve ever taken come from the unexpected stars.
